What size cock ring do you need? Measure around the base of your shaft when you’re hard, divide that number in millimetres by 3.14, and you have the inside diameter to look for. Add 2 to 3 mm if the ring is rigid metal. Average erect girth is around 11.7 cm, according to a large 2015 study in BJU International, which works out at about 37 mm across, so if your number lands nearby you’re in the usual range. The chart below does the maths for you.
Why Sizing Matters More Than Anything
Knowing how to measure for a cock ring is the single thing that decides whether the toy works. Too loose and it does nothing. Too tight and it becomes uncomfortable and risks cutting off circulation. Fit matters more than material, price, or features, so it is worth getting right before you buy.
The Simple Method
Cock Ring Size Chart
Find your measurement in the left column. The middle column is the inside diameter it works out to, and the right column is what to buy if the ring is rigid metal. No tape measure? Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around the base, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler. It takes about thirty seconds.
| Your measurement (around the base, erect) | Inside diameter | Rigid ring to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 10 cm | 32 mm | 34 to 35 mm |
| 11 cm | 35 mm | 37 to 38 mm |
| 12 cm | 38 mm | 40 to 41 mm |
| 13 cm | 41 mm | 43 to 44 mm |
| 14 cm | 45 mm | 47 to 48 mm |
| 15 cm | 48 mm | 50 to 51 mm |
| 16 cm | 51 mm | 53 to 54 mm |
| 17 cm | 54 mm | 56 to 57 mm |
Wearing the ring around your shaft and balls together? Wrap the string where the ring will actually sit: behind your balls, then up and over the top of the shaft at the base, snug without pulling. Read that number off the same chart. It will be bigger than a shaft-only measurement, so don’t reuse one for the other.
Width matters too. A wide band grips over more skin, so it feels tighter than a thin ring with the same inside diameter. If you’re choosing a wide or chunky ring, lean towards the bigger end of your range.
Metal rings are often sold in 5 mm steps. If your number falls between two sizes, take the bigger one: a rigid ring that’s slightly loose is only an annoyance, while one that’s too small can be hard to get off. Stretchy silicone doesn’t need this much precision. Pick one with an inside diameter a little under your number and it will stretch to grip.
Which Ring to Start With
If this is your first ring, start stretchy. The Never Tyred Silicone Cock Ring has a 5 cm inside diameter and plenty of give. For a firmer grip, the Hard Head Cock Ring is firm silicone with a 2 cm inside diameter that stretches to fit. If you’d rather set the fit yourself, the Leather Strap With Metal Cock Ring adjusts, so you aren’t locked into one size while you work out what you like.
Whichever you choose, keep sessions to 20 or 30 minutes at most.
Measure the circumference at the base of your shaft when erect, or around the shaft and scrotum together if you plan to wear the ring around both. Take that measurement in millimetres and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter you need. If the ring is rigid, add two to three millimetres for comfort.
Stretchy vs Rigid Rings
Stretchy silicone rings are forgiving, so getting within a few millimetres is fine, and a multi-size pack lets you find your fit by trying. Rigid metal rings do not give at all, so accurate measurement is essential. If you are between sizes on a metal ring, size up.
Checking the Fit
A correctly sized ring feels snug, like a firm grip rather than a tight squeeze, and you should be able to slip a fingertip under it. Put it on when semi-hard, not fully erect. If you feel numbness, throbbing, or see any colour change, it is too tight, so take it off and size up.
Common Sizing Mistakes
The usual mistake is measuring soft. Measure erect, because that’s the size the ring has to work at. The other is guessing high on a stretchy ring, which leaves it too loose to do anything. Rigid rings are the exception: if you’re between sizes, go up.
